NICHOLSON, John Macleod
May 10, 1936 - January 29, 2015
John was a man of honour dignity whose extraordinary life was shaped by his independence and self-reliance. From a very young age his life was woven by adventure and, at times, harrowing experiences. He was intrigued by all of life’s possibilities and was pushing the limits in pursuit of personal excellence. Cherished husband of Bonnie, adored father of Ian and Andrew, proud Granddad of Kieran. Dear brother of Michael (Australia) and Malcolm (UK). Leaves many cousins including Rodney, Molly, Joy as well as nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents Ernest and Margaret Nicholson. As a young child he experienced the sardine-like conditions of air raid shelters only to discover the devastation of war and later as a Royal Marine (HMS Centaur) experiences life on an air craft carrier. As a young man he became a supervisor of a rubber tree plantation in Malaya where he had to learn the language and it was there he learned to pilot a Tiger Moth plane. After coming to Canada in the early 60’s he held a variety of jobs like selling bakery to shops and a fitness instructor at Vic Tanny. Starting off as an OPP officer in Port Credit his policing career had begun. He eventually joined the Windsor Police, in the call box era, raised up through the ranks to Staff Sergeant and retired as inspector - a span of 32 ½ years. During this time he earned his BA and BCom (Hons). John was an artist, poet and loved jogging. He enjoyed playing rugby and cricket and loved his cats, Chantek and Kuching. Two of his role models were Winston Churchill and William Shakespeare. John is leaving behind some wonderful memories and will be missed by many. Visitation will be held at Victoria Greenlawn Funeral Home, 1525 Highway #3, Oldcastle (519-969-3939), on Wednesday from 2-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. The funeral service will take place on Thursday, February 5, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel. The interment to follow at Victoria Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society would be appreciated.
